Dalia’s Story

A women with two children

Raising her girls in Bristol and in this home is about more than just having a roof over their heads. It’s about restoring a deep family legacy. This home was first purchased by Dalia’s grandparents after moving to the United States.

Legacy and tradition

For Dalia, it was the place where she grew up and shared a strong bond with her grandmother, spending many days and holidays in her grandparents’ home.

After her grandparents passed, Dalia eventually rented and moved into the home she’d always loved and cherished.

When Habitat bought the house adjoining Dalia’s, no one realized the extent of the structural deterioration affecting both houses. Ultimately, both homes had to be torn down.

“When the house came down, we were very sad. It’s going to look different, but it’s going to be safer. It’s going to be useful for the next 100 years.”

Now, Dalia is embracing the chance to rebuild — not just this house, but the community and traditions it represents. Entrenched in the memories of her childhood, Dalia hopes to preserve this legacy and carry it forward for generations to come.

Kim’s Story

A woman with two kids
Kim’s story began in Croydon, where she grew up across the street from her childhood friend, whose family lived in one of Habitat Bucks’ first homes.

Determined to stay in Bristol near her parents, Kim and her children moved several times, struggling to keep up with rising rents and increasing costs.

Today, Kim and her two sons live in a cramped and costly two-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment.

Despite her best efforts and hard work, the path to homeownership remained just out of reach.

“I’ve dreamed of being a homeowner for a long time now and I’m really grateful to have something that I can call my own, something for my children.”

Encouraged to explore Habitat for herself, Kim began working to build stability and strength for her family.

Persistence Pays Off

After more than two years, Kim and her boys will finally step into a home they can call their own. She is excited to have space for a dining table – a place to gather, celebrate, and host her first family Thanksgiving.
