In
the year since the Indian Ocean tsunami, Habitat for Humanity
has assisted an estimated 6,000 households in India, Indonesia,
Sri Lanka and Thailand to gain permanent housing.
"You
cannot visit here without having your heart changed. Meeting the
families who lost so much, seeing the immense destruction and
hearing of the 50,000 people who still live in temporary shelters,
it is easy to be discouraged. But it is clear to me how God is
at work here in Indonesia. There is hope, there is promise and
there is progress. And Habitat for Humanity is making it happen,
" says Jonathan Reckford, Habitat for Humanity Chief Executive
Officer, in Banda Aceh.

Habitat
Bucks' Commitment to Tsunami Victims
Like the rest of the world, the Board of Directors and staff
of Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County have been feeling an overwhelming
desire to help those affected by what is quickly becoming known
as “the world’s most devastating natural disaster
in memory.” Shortly after the disaster, the executive committee
of Habitat Bucks voted unanimously to designate the affiliate’s
4th quarter 2004 tithe of $10,664 to the tsunami-struck region
of southern Asia. The tithe was sent to Habitat for Humanity International,
a presidential-approved tsunami aid agency, who dispersed the
funds to the Habitat affiliates in most need. Habitat has a presence
in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Malaysia and Bangladesh.
“Adequate shelter is a basic human need, a right,”
explains Habitat Bucks’ Executive Director, Trish Kriger,
“This region was already struggling to provide safe, decent
housing for people in need. This disaster has magnified the crisis
to unthinkable proportions. We are glad that these funds will
go to directly address housing needs for some of the victims of
this catastrophe.”
